{The Shelter} April 23, 2011

Remember in a previous post I talked about URI dogs?  All of the dogs in this post are URI (Upper Respiratory Infection) dogs.  It’s important to know they exist (in a separate section from the front of the shelter) so if you are looking into adopting a pet, consider a dog that is sick, help get them treatment and give them a chance to have a happy life!  We take care of sick children, lets take care of our sick animals!  Get the word out to others that this part of the shelter exists.  Once someone looks at the dogs in the front part of the shelter they can ask to view the URI dogs but cannot go back into the front part again as to not infect the healthier dogs.

This is Buddy.  He’s a 3 year old Rottweiler that’s looking for a home.  {A404933} He is heartworm positive so he will need medication which FOJA may be able to assist with since they do assist the shelter with medical care.  He’s been in the shelter since 4/11/11.

A few unexpected things happened this week during my trip to the shelter.  I discovered one dog {Spider} I wanted to feature is going to be put down because he got into a fight with another dog and bit a volunteer that tried to help break it up.  This is Spider.  Lets say a prayer for him to have a peaceful passing.

I ran into another dog that has no name {A404987} but was found on 4/12/11 wandering in a field.  It looks to me like she has mange but the redness could actually be caused by many different things.  Did you know there are 3 types of mange are not all are contagious?  Mange is caused by tiny mites that burrow beneath the skin…basically it’s like human scabies.

This cute little thing is a grandma {name unknown, A405820}!  She’s a 10 year old Toy Poodle and will hopefully get rescued.  She was so sweet I had to add her.  Every one of her teeth are yellow/brown = rotten. I hope she’s able to get the dental help she needs.  She’s to old to deal with this stuff!

Alright folks that’s it for this post.  Hope everyone has a happy weekend and a Happy Easter!

  1. Wow. This is so informative and yet depressing all at once. Poor Spider shouldn’t have to be put down. It is important to know how different dogs react in different situations just like People can be major jerks sometimes in certain situations! We don’t put down people just because they are having a bad wk. or because they are in a location that they feel uncomfortable in! This is so NOT RIGHT! Call Ceaser “The Dog Whisperer”! Call for a Reprieve!!!!

There is something so WRONG here! I understand that the dog showed aggression! So would My perfect little Chawiener in the Wrong Situation! He doesn’t have a mean bone in His body but, U put Him in a situation that is hard for Him & He will do what He must! My Doxi too as well as My Big Girl mix breed!

Please go back to them & suggest they contact Ceaser To hollar w/some beneficial advice! What have they got to lose? Keep Spider out of that situation till U hear from the Dog whisperer!
I Pray it isn’t to late! What Tragic news to read on EASTER!
Thanks for sharing-though it is Horribly sad-Atleast I now can Pray for them- I always Pray for Our Animals and People who are “Homeless”…To be “PUT DOWN” because U didn’t get along in a certain situation is just NOT RIGHT! <3

Dianna I’m sorry to make you sad on Easter. It isn’t fair but unfortunately the system is overrun with dogs that they cannot take care of. There is something wrong with this situation and of course a dog is going to bite someone that sticks their hand in the middle of the fight. The same thing would happen if two people were fighting as well…someone trying to break it up may become injured.

I wrote the shelters 11-year volunteer to ask what the typical protocol is for this type of situation and I will let you know if I hear anything. Thanks for your genuine concern and keep praying!
